North African and Southwest Asia are the birthplace to three major monotheistic religions, which are Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Israelis call the 1948 Arab-Israeli war the War of Independence because this war allowed them to create the state of Israel and become independent. The war first started out from series of conflicts between the Israelis and Arabs with religious disputes. The three groups of religion all claimed to be the dominant and the holiest place.

Arab Attacks 1948
present day the region is in conflict of the area known as Palestine. After the first World War, the British created an area out of the provinces they received, which had been known as “southern Syria.” When the mandate was issued in 1922, Palestine had a population of 81,400 Christians, 638,000 Muslims, and 93,400 Jews. The area west of Jordan became a shelter for Jews as refuges from Europe immigrated to the area to avoid persecution.
Local Arabs reacted immediately to this action. Rebels were acted upon the British and attacked the growing Jewish population. With the rise of Adolf Hitler, the Jewish immigration rate increased which led to the Great Uprising (1936-1939) which targeted the British and Jewish population now living in the country. In November 1947, a plan was approved in which Palestine will be divided into two states, a Jewish and an Arab. The Jewish community gladly embraced the idea, but Arabs and other opposing groups rejected the idea.
After many long years of fighting and constant break out of conflicts,a resolution was passed in 1948 that stated: “refugees wishing to return to their homes and live in peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so.” About 750,000 Arab Palestine refugees and more than 600,000 Jewish refugees were created during this conflict. Jewish refugees moved to Israel from the Arab lands, and Arab refugees were not allowed to settle in neighboring countries. Thus, Jewish communities in North Africa and parts of Southwest Asia came to an end in the late 1940s when most of the Arabian governments forced Jews to flee.
About 600,000 Jewish refugees of 900,000, were taken in by Israel. In the present, almost half of the Jewish citizens living in Israel are the refugees and their descendants. Others fled to parts of Europe and the Americas, mostly to the United States. Israel was glad to accept any who wished to be their citizen. Some Jewish people fled from the most hostile countries such as Iraq, Libya, Egypt, etc. forcing themselves to abandon their property.
How did the Jewish refugees mostly end up in Israel?
Push factors:
-Persecution toward Jewish people
-Constant conflict between Arabs and Jews with religion
-1948 Arab-Israeli War (War of Independence) Pull factors:
-Israel provided a 'home' for the refugees, accepting any Jewish people who wished to come
-Safer from the persecution and angry Arabs
-Northern Africa and Southwestern Asia
